Understand Polling Rates, DPI, CPS, and double-click test mechanics to troubleshoot hardware issues and optimize performance.

1. What is Mouse Polling Rate (Hz)?

Polling rate (measured in Hz) specifies how frequently a mouse sends cursor position reports to the host PC per second. A 1000 Hz rate translates to 1,000 updates per second (~1ms interval). Higher rates produce smoother cursor motion:

  • 125 Hz – 250 Hz: Standard office mouse parameters, sufficient for web browsing.
  • 500 Hz – 1000 Hz: Standard esports baseline; 1000 Hz minimum recommended for competitive FPS.
  • 2000 Hz – 8000 Hz (4K/8K): High-end gaming gear; demands high refresh rate monitors (240Hz+) and fast CPUs.

2. What do DPI and CPS mean?

  • DPI (Dots Per Inch): Sensitivity metric indicating how many pixels the cursor traverses per physical inch of travel.
  • CPS (Clicks Per Second): Speed metric measuring finger click frequency per second.

Mouse Troubleshooting FAQ

Q: How do I test if my mouse switch has a double-clicking flaw?

Degraded switch contacts cause single physical clicks to register as double activations. Use the key test on this page to monitor hold durations and click counts. If single clicks reliably generate rapid secondary actuations (<10ms intervals), the microswitch contact plate is failing.

Q: Why does my measured Polling Rate fail to hit rated 1000Hz or 4000Hz values?

Browser-based measurement relies on frame rendering loops (like requestAnimationFrame) and OS event threads. Stationary mice lower polling to save power. OS power-saving modes, weak USB bus power, or background tab throttling will also artificially lower reported Hz. Sweep the mouse continuously and rapidly during tests to push peak polling rates.
