How a Spirit Level Works

Understand the bubbles and your phone’s sensors for more reliable readings.

How does the level work?

The level calculates tilt angles from the device orientation data supplied by your browser and shows them through the bubble positions. This orientation may be estimated using an accelerometer, a gyroscope and other sensors; the exact sources depend on your device and browser. The bubbles are simulated: there are no liquid-filled vials inside your phone. The 2D and 3D versions use the same angle calculations.

How do I read the circular level and edge vials?

The central circular level shows tilt in two directions at once, making it useful when your phone is flat. Each edge vial shows tilt along one axis, useful for checking an edge or holding the phone on its side. A centered bubble means that axis is close to level; one centered vial does not mean the entire surface is level.

Why doesn’t it read exactly 0° on a table?

The table’s tilt, sensor error, a phone case or a protruding camera can all affect the reading. Your phone measures its own orientation, which may differ from the angle of the surface it rests on. Keep the phone steady against the surface and check whether any protrusions are lifting it.

Why do the readings change when I move?

Picking up, shaking or quickly moving your phone changes its orientation and may also temporarily affect the sensor estimates, causing the bubbles and angle readings to fluctuate. Let the phone settle before taking a reading for a more reliable result. The acceleration and G readings shown below are separate sensor information and are not used directly to calculate the level angles.
