Acoustic Bands & Waveform Fundamentals

Understand frequency spectrum distribution, harmonic structures, and the acoustics behind transducer burn-in.

Audio Frequency Spectrum Divisions

The theoretical hearing range of human ears spans from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz). In acoustic engineering and audio tuning, the spectrum is divided into five core bands:

Frequency BandFrequency RangeAcoustic Characteristics & Testing Focus
Sub-Bass20 – 60 HzFelt physically more than heard; ideal for testing subwoofer extension and enclosure resonance.
Bass60 – 250 HzThe fundamental backbone of kick drums and bass lines; excessive energy causes boominess, while too little sounds thin.
Midrange250 – 4,000 HzThe core of human vocals and most acoustic instruments; defines presence, body, and timbral clarity.
Presence4,000 – 6,000 HzThe most sensitive hearing region (2kHz–5kHz); governs sonic bite, intelligibility, and soundstage intimacy.
Brilliance6,000 – 20,000 HzHarmonics, sparkle, and airy overtones; determines top-end extension and perceived soundstage width.

Physical Characteristics of Waveforms

  • Sine Wave: A pure single fundamental frequency with zero harmonics; optimal for measuring frequency response and harmonic distortion.
  • Square Wave: Rich in odd harmonics; bright with a retro 8-bit timbre.
  • Sawtooth Wave: Contains both even and odd harmonics; sharp, buzzy, and cutting.
  • Triangle Wave: Contains only odd harmonics that roll off quadratically; warm and mellow tone.

Acoustic FAQ

Why can't I hear anything at 18kHz or 20kHz?

This is completely normal. High-frequency perception naturally declines with age (most adults top out around 14kHz–16kHz). Furthermore, many consumer headphones exhibit steep roll-offs in this region.

What is the science behind headphone burn-in?

Fresh out of the factory, driver suspensions and mechanical surrounds are relatively stiff. Continuous physical excitation via sweeps and pink noise accelerates the settling of polymer chains, allowing suspensions to reach optimal mechanical compliance.

Will playback stop when running in the background on mobile devices?

This suite integrates an active screen wake lock. Keep the tab open to prevent your device from sleeping and interrupting the test.
